Randy and I went on our third date to a Paul Butterfield/Rick Danko concert at the Boomer theater. I won a “contest” there put on by the KATT radio station. The prize was a trip on their “Magical Mystery Tour”. They didn’t tell you where they were taking you, just what to wear and show up at the station early in the morning. Randy and I went to the “mountains” and went repelling.
And so began our journey on our very own Magical Mystery Tour.
Randy was the ultimate Beatle. Randy was the happy -go-lucky drummer….just like Ringo, sitting in and jamming with many bands, just picking up the beat. But he had the cute looks and sensitivity of Paul, the contemplative spirituality of George, He embodied the essence of John, the freedom and rebeliousness and his concerns for humanity and later in life, devoted to his child.
When John came out with his niew album in 1980, we listened to it in the Wilson cabin. I recorded many beatles and John Lennons records onto cassette tapes, many of which he still listened to. We were broken-hearted when we heared the news of his loss while at the old Fish Creek Inn. We shared our love for the Beatles, more music, art, and the outdoors.
So the drums are set up in honor of Randy. These were my drums when I was a kid, but I started playing guitar, so Randy combined my set with his. We had fun playing together, paint it black, wipeout, and Little Wing and many Beatles songs.
Unlike the Beatles, the Uncaled Four and Moonrod Waltz, came together for a tribute to their fourth member.
And in the End, the love you take, is equal to the love you make.
